Increasing Transparency in the Oil and Gas Industry

DCAF-ICRC Toolkit Cited in Ipieca’s Updated Sustainability Reporting Guidance

The Security and Human Rights Toolkit is cited as a reference in the 5th edition of Ipieca’s Sustainability Reporting Guidance for the Oil and Gas Industry- a benchmark for sustainability reporting across the energy sector. In June 2025, Ipieca revised Module 6 to support companies in developing the social responsibility sections of their corporate ESG reports.

The newly updated guidance provides a stronger quality check for companies, creating a set of “Core” and “Additional” indicators that clarify– respectively -  baseline and good practice expectations for company sustainability reports. The Security and Human Rights section (SOC-3) is significantly expanded, encompassing more disclosures on company security arrangements. The guidance does not explicitly mention conflict sensitivity nor conflict prevention measures in any indicators, indicating a significant gap since many standards are increasingly incorporating these aspects into their requirements. However, the sections on Local Community Impacts (SOC-9), Human Rights Due Diligence (SOC-1) and Security and Human Rights (SOC-3) do reference good practices that fall within the scope of conflict prevention.

DCAF has been supporting Ipieca and its member companies to integrate conflict prevention, international humanitarian law, human rights and security considerations into due diligence actions as well as sustainability reporting practices. The inclusion of the DCAF-ICRC Toolkit highlights the importance of responsible security management and respect for human rights as essential aspects for transparency in ESG reports. This recognition reflects DCAF’s efforts to work with industry standard-setters to strengthen responsible business practices and promote security governance that supports peace, stability, and respect for human rights.
